What will your comeback moment look like?

What will your comeback moment look like? Blog post about the 2020 US Open Finals by DH Weinberg (dhweinberg.com).As a former tennis player, I was absolutely riveted several years ago by the U.S. Open Tennis finals!  The eventual champions, Naomi Osaka (women) and Dominic Thiem (men) – were WAY DOWN in the first two sets.  If you were a betting man (or woman), you would have said THERE’S NO WAY that either of them could come back and win the finals!  NO WAY.  Not only were they losing badly, but they were mumbling to themselves, looking terribly discouraged, and shaking their heads – having no idea why they were performing so badly, or what to do about it.

But there’s a great lesson in their eventual turnaround and victories:

YOU DON’T KNOW HOW THINGS WILL TURN OUT – DESPITE HOW IT LOOKS AT THE TIME!

That’s the great thing about sports – the COMEBACK!

The miracle pass at the end of a football game.  The walk-off home run in the 9th inning.  The soccer goal in the 90th minute.  And sports are just an analogy for life.

At times, it can look like your marriage or dating relationship isn’t going to work out.  The promotion is never going to happen.  The job is never going to turn up.  The disease will never be cured.  The dream is never going to come to fruition.  Because we all can’t envision the possibility of the turnaround.  And we want to protect our hearts from disappointment.  So often, we just give up or give in to what will “probably” happen.

Yet, if Osaka or Thiem had done that, said “it just doesn’t look like I’ll win now,” they would not be holding championship trophies (or checks for $3 million each).  The lesson is – you don’t know the outcome – no matter how it looks at the time!  And the only thing you can control is the next point, your next move.  And if you do that, sometimes you will lose in the end.  BUT SOMETIMES — you’ll pull victory from the jaws of defeat!
